Getting started

Set up your Otto

Set up your Otto once, then it stays on and ready to work. You will power it on, pair it to the Otto app, connect it to the internet, and choose how it accesses AI models.

1. Plug in your Otto

Connect Otto to power. If you have Ethernet available, connect that too—it is usually the most stable and fastest internet connection. Wi-Fi works well if Ethernet is not practical.

2. Turn it on

Press the power button on the front-right of the device. The indicator light on the front-left should turn on. After powering on, Otto takes about 30–60 seconds to become discoverable for pairing.

3. Install the Otto app

Use the QR code in the box, or visit Download the Otto app. That page has installers for iPhone, Android, and desktop.

4. Create your account

Open the app and create an Otto account, or sign in if you already have one.

5. Pair your Otto

The app first shows Plug in your Otto. Once Otto is powered on, tap Continue. The pairing screen then begins looking for nearby devices. When your Otto appears, select it to continue.

Before pairing, check that:

  • Otto is plugged in, powered on, and has had at least 30–60 seconds to start.
  • Bluetooth is turned on for the phone you are pairing with.
  • If Otto is using Ethernet, your phone is connected to the same local network over Wi-Fi.

If you do not see your Otto, wait 30 seconds and scan again. If it still does not appear, unplug Otto for 10 seconds, fully close the app, plug Otto back in, wait 60 seconds, then try again.

6. Connect Otto to the internet

If Otto is not already using Ethernet, select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password. If Ethernet is connected, the app will recognize it and you can continue without entering Wi-Fi details.

7. Let Otto update

After pairing, Otto checks for the latest version of Otto OS and installs an update when one is available. Keep it powered and connected while this finishes.

8. Finish account setup

The app will ask you to:

  1. Enable notifications, so Otto can reach you when it needs a decision or has completed work.
  2. Optionally connect apps. You can skip this and connect them later, once you know what you want Otto to help with.
  3. Set up Gateway access, either by adding credit or choosing your own model provider keys.

9. Wait for Otto to come online

When setup is complete, the app opens your conversation with Otto. Its agent may still be starting; the chat shows an indicator while this happens. It is usually ready within about a minute.

If it has not come online after a few minutes, confirm that Otto is online in Devices, then see Troubleshooting.
